Building economic strength is a major strategic priority for the Matawa member First Nations. As such, the Economic Development advisory department aims to provide resources that will assist in promoting sustainable development both individually within each Matawa community and on a regional level as joint venture initiatives.

First Nations people are critical to Canada’s future prosperity. Our growing and relatively sizeable youthful population, our substantial land holdings, and our developing business sector are key to moving ahead with economic opportunities for our First Nations. We must work together to ensure that our people share in the economic wealth and prosperity of this country, this is essential to achieving improved social outcomes. Continued dependency on government transfers and economic side-lining is unacceptable to all First Nations peoples across Canada.

Industry and government must respect the autonomy and unique decision making protocols of the Matawa communities and demonstrate a willingness to ensure they are fully aware of those processes from the get-go. Our Aboriginal and Treaty Rights under the Canadian Constitution also needs to be honoured before any economic activity occurs and that the Matawa member First Nations' free, prior, informed consent is provided to guarantee satisfactory consultation and accommodation practices.

Matawa Economic Development strives to assist our member First Nations to respond to new and changing economic conditions and emerging opportunities and seeks to leverage partnerships to achieve sustainable economic development.  One of our main goals is to ensure that our First Nations people enjoy the same opportunities for employment, income, wealth creation and well-being as other Canadians.
