Deadline for Jordan Wabasse Memorial Awards
The Jordan Wabasse family, Webequie Education Authority and Matawa Education are pleased to announce that student applications for the seventh annual Jordan Wabasse Memorial Awards are now live! The fillable application is available here: https://www.matawa.on.ca/…/Jordan-Wabasse-Memorial…
Each year the Jordan Wabasse Memorial Awards honours six (6) graduating Matawa high school students for Excellence in Athletics or Outdoor Education by awarding them with a $1000 each for their hard work and dedication. Winners are high school graduates from either of the following schools:
-Simon Jacob Memorial Education Centre in Webequie First Nation
-Keewaytinook Internet High School in Webequie First Nation
-Matawa Education and Care Centre in Thunder Bay, ON
-Any Provincial High School in Thunder Bay, ON
Winners must also be members of a Matawa First Nation which includes: Aroland, Constance Lake, Eabametoong, Ginoogaming, Long Lake #58, Marten Falls, Neskantaga, Nibinamik, and Webequie.
The Jordan Wabasse Memorial Awards were established during the 2017-2018 academic year in tribute to the late Jordan Wabasse, a youth from Webequie First Nation, and a student of the Matawa Learning Centre (now Matawa Education and Care Centre). Jordan was a dedicated hockey player and hunter whose life tragically ended far too soon in 2011.
As a result of this tragedy and six other tragedies in Thunder Bay, the Seven Youth Inquest was held. It recommended a special memorial award be made in Jordan’s honour. So far, over $42,000 has been distributed to Matawa high school graduates in memory of the late Jordan Wabasse.
Students attending schools who are not in a formal Athletics or Outdoor Education program in school are encouraged to apply if they enjoy being out on the land or playing sports as Jordan so lovingly did.
