MATAWA CHIEFS COUNCIL CONGRATULATE WALLY MCKAY ON 55 YEARS OF SERVICE TO INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

THUNDER BAY, ON: The Matawa Chiefs Council (MCC) congratulated Sachigo Lake First Nation member Wally McKay on 55 years of service to Indigenous Peoples. Recognition of Wally McKay’s long-term commitment took place today in Winnipeg, Manitoba in a ceremony honouring his leadership.

The MCC worked with McKay in his role as advisor to First Nations in Matawa both at the First Nation and Tribal Council levels and political representative at the regional/national Political Territorial Levels (including Nishnawbe-Aski Nation, Chiefs of Ontario and Assembly of First Nations). They provided following statement:

“Having worked with our Nations for many years (and in some cases decades) on various files such as Treaty Land Entitlement, Regional Framework Agreement, and others—the Matawa Chiefs Council have experienced first-hand Wally McKay’s life’s work towards the betterment of Indigenous Peoples. He has always been someone who could be counted on to best represent Indigenous Peoples and his honed skills in diplomacy over his 55 years of service became second-to-none. His work will always be a legacy to the Peoples of Matawa and we wish him the very best in his much-deserved retirement.”
