MATAWA EDUCATION AND CARE STUDENTS HOST THUNDER BAY POLICE SERVICE TO A HOCKEY GAME

THUNDER BAY, ON: Students from the Matawa Education and Care Centre (MECC) will be hosting Officers from the Thunder Bay Police Service to play a mixed team hockey game at the Fort William Gardens.

Since the beginning of this school year, MECC students from grades 9 to 12 have been participating in a Hockey Academy that focuses on team building, leadership skills, and positive sportsmanship both on and off the ice. Students participate in weekly drills from stick handing to edge work and other related hockey drills with an emphasis on a commitment to healthy living. MECC has been an accredited Canadian Hockey Academy member since June of last year.

MECC students have also been learning about the Indigenous teachings surrounding the changing seasons. Prior to the game, a MECC Cultural Worker will do a teaching about the first day of Spring which falls on March 20th and is known to represent new beginnings and new life.

The teams will be mixed between the officers and the MECC students. The overall theme of the game is the continued relationship with the city police force and Matawa Education and Care Centre students.

Members of the media are cordially invited to attend.
