MATAWA HOSTS HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS WORKSHOP

THUNDER BAY, ON: In advance of Human Trafficking Awareness Day acknowledged on February 22, the Matawa Health & Social Meno Biimadeswin Department and the Matawa Health Co-operative are hosting a fundraising workshop for the Thunder Bay and Area Victim Services. The workshop is taking place from February 5 – 7, 2019.

During the workshop, over 75 attendees from child welfare and social service agencies from Thunder Bay and across the region, along with health and social staff from the Matawa and other First Nations, will participate in workshops from two renowned guest speakers who have survived human trafficking, along with organizations providing services to those experiencing human trafficking like the Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre in Winnipeg and the Ontario Provincial Police Human Trafficking Unit.

Attendees will also be given an opportunity to participate in the Kairos Blanket Exercise which is an experiential teaching tool based on participatory education methodology, and the major themes and findings of the 1996 Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples.
