Neskantaga First Nation to Welcome Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada in Community Visit

Landsdown House, ON – Neskantaga First Nation Chief Wayne Moonias and his community will be welcoming Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs to Neskantaga First Nation for a community visit on April 15 and 16, 2016. Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Perry Bellegarde and Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler will also be in attendance.

Chief Moonias will be giving the Minister a firsthand view of the effects the 20 year boil water advisory has on health and living conditions of the community. They will also be discussing other issues such as social emergencies, deterioration of housing and other infrastructure, the fiscal relationship, amongst others.

Many of these issues will be discussed in the context of the federal budget 2016 along with proposed development in the area known as the Ring of Fire. Neskantaga First Nation is the only community up-river of the proposed development on the same Attawapiskat watershed.
